Sailfish Bite
The local Sailfish action has been up and down lately
depending on water and weather conditions. Off of Marathon this past
week, a large area of dirty water was holding off the reef edge
making the Sailfishing difficult. A few fish were had by local capts
and we had a few hook ups on the Sundance including a nice 92" Sail
caught by Mike Anderson of Lima, OH. The area from Long key to
Islamorada has been a bit better recently with some great action in
the recent Presidential Sailfish tournament where there were 127
Sails caught in two days of fishing by the tournament participants.
Look for the action off the middle keys to be good for Sailfish
right on through April when conditions are good.
Big Blacks
A few large Black Grouper have been
coming in from the oceanside wrecks off of Marathon lately including
a 51lber caught by Charles Flint, Jr. on the "Sundance" the other
day. We have been finding the big Groupers on wrecks over 100ft
lately and they have been eating a variety of larger baits including
Blue Runners, Yellowtails, and Mullet. Some nice Grouper have been
coming in from the deeper reef edge also as my friend from Ohio,
Harry Tomer, reported catching a 38lb Black out of 90ft recently.
The reef action has been great for Yellowtail Snapper recently also,
with some great catches coming in to the dock at the 7 Mile Marina
in Marathon. Some nice Red Grouper and Mutton Snapper have been
coming in from the patch reefs along with lots of decent Cero
Mackerel. King Mackerel action has been a bit slow but may heat up
again after this new cool snap we are having. All in all, reef and
wreck fishing has been the hot bite off of Marathon.
Bayside Big Mack Attack
Spanish Mackerel have been hanging out in Florida bay and the
action has been fast and furious. Limit catches in an hour or two
have been common and some nice Snapper mixed in here and there as
well. Cobia have been on the outer wrecks but the recent cool snap
may cool them off a bit. Look for Cobia to filter though to the
ocean side off of Long Key bridge and along the color change off of
Marathon. Nice Cobia have also been caught lately at the 7 mile
bridge along with lots of nice snapper and jacks. For more
information, check out our web site!
Good luck in all of your fishing adventures!
