 Islamorada Backcountry Fishing Report
Contributed By Captain Ann Holahan - Boneranger - Backcountry Fishing

Fishing Report for November 27, 2000!

Hello, from the Sportfishing Capital

of the World! Happy Holidays to you

all, and hope you all enjoyed your

Thanksgiving, and you didn't eat

too much!

As always, I thoroughly enjoy

all anglers from every part of

United States and other Countries

that come and enjoy the magnificant

beauty of the Florida Keys.

They get to see for themselves the

magnitude and diversity here from

snorkeling the coral reef to actually

sight cast fishing to some really incredible

saltwater gamefish!

We have had some very prevalent wind these

days here in the Keys, and the temperature

has been Fabulous with daily temperatures

in the Mid-70's with winds blowing out

of the North, to East, making casting

difficult, and have definitely received

our first cold front of the season.

There has been alot of bait action on

the flats with several schools of mullet,

and pilchards on the high tides, and we

have reports of tarpon being sighted in

the backcountry on the last incoming

and first part of the falling tides,

chasing and eating on the mullet schools.

Tarpon have been running from 20lbs up to

40lbs.

The Shrimp are also popping the surface

in the late hours at the bridges making

for some Great Snook fishing, with snook

ranging from 7lbs up to 15lbs. They too

have been a bit slow on the bite in the

backcountry, but with the bait in excess,

it is surely to improve with the big monsters,

biting on light tackle. Reports of some

big snook have been reported in the Gulf

on the rock piles and wrecks in the Gulf.

We have had alot of sharks, and barracuda

sharing space with the bonefish these

past few weeks. With catches of bonefish

and releases in the 8lb to 12lb catagory.

For all my anglers that fished this month,

we have sure had a tough go, but I would

like to thank John and Stephanie aka

Michelle, for a great morning on the flats,

John hooked into a big 10-11lb bonefish,

in which the run was too powerful, and

John couldn't believe the line running

from this tremendous fish, he was like

a running back on the football team,

waiting to score his touchdown, but,

we had a mechanical failure on the reel,

and lost the fish, but John did manage

to bag an 8lb bone oceanside, and he

said he thoroughly enjoyed catching

and releasing the fish, but couldn't

believe the fastinating run the big

bone gave him. We will see you both in

June to grab another, and do some tarpon

on the fly! I believe John is hooked.

I would also like to thank Michelle and

Bob, for their morning, we had a great time

and caught and released several sharks, and

barracuda, we had quite a windy day to go

fishing. They too will be back to try

for those elusive bones.

I also had the pleasure of taking Marc

and Ned Peters from California out bonefishing

and they both caught and released bonefish

ranging in from 7lbs for Marc, and 12lbs

for Ned. Again, and exasperating run, and

with the continual run, Ned took about 30

minutes to bring in his big bonefish! He

couldn't believe the coloring of the tail

on these beautys, a beautiful hue of blue

and purple in their tail. What a great morning

was had by both.

We also have been in the backcountry with

catches of trout, ladyfish, jack crevelle,

and snapper. There are plenty of redfish

in Flamingo, feeding on live bait shrimp,

and jigs tipped with shrimp, ranging in

size of 7lbs up to 9lbs. Hitting some

of the mud holes, surely will produce

some of those reds!

We certainly have a great Fall and Winter

Season coming up,and I would sure hate

to see you avid fisherman or women miss

the bite on those elusive bonefish, what

a thrill to see the run and power of these

fish.

You can also experience a day in the backcountry,

with the beauty of Everglades National Park,

your sure to come back with a smile on your face.

So, for you Fly Enthusiasts, and Light Tackle

Specialists, lets get our Season off with a

Blast, and have these Bones run our Lines off

with a Scream!

Evening fishing has been good, with small tarpon,

snapper, snook, feeding at the bridges

and channels, eating on live bait crabs, pinfish,

and with the plenty of pilchards and mullets,

you are bound to get one of these rod benders.

Don't forget, I also offer early evening trips for

bonefishing, and evenings are some great times

catch and release them on light tackle or fly! I also offer

No Pressure Fly Instruction, and would be happy

to get you involved in the most sought after

sport and gamefish your looking for.

Give me a call or drop an email at captann@boneranger.com,

Also For All of Our Fishing or Fly Enthusiasts December,

January, and Feb. can offer some great and will prove

to be a great time for backcountry and oceanside Flats

fishing, for either Bonefish, or to test your skills

and hone in, on some great backcountry fishing

and hook into other Challenging Saltwater Gamefish,

such as Redfish, Trout, Snook, Sharks, and Bonefish

and Small Tarpon.

Just a Regular note of reminder to anglers, please make sure

you have proper gear with you such as Amber Polorized

Sunglasses, it's essential you have them, they

cut the glare down immensely, and you will have

an easier time in seeing the fish to cast at!

Also, make sure you have at least a Sunblock with

a SPF of 30 or better, you don't want your vacation

to be ruined with some terrible sunburns, this

time of the year the UV'S are very strong, and

make sure you bring plenty of water, and ice tea

to Cool Off, after Fighting the Big Fish!

As the waters offshore start getting geared for

a great Fall and Winter season, fishing has been

Great! They too are having daily catches of schooley

dolphin, snapper, grouper, kingfish, barracuda,

wahoo, sailfish, makeral, and tuna!

If you would like to go offshore, please email or

call me at 305-664-5891. I can recommend some of

the Best Offshore Captains Available, or you can call

Bud n' Mary's Marina directly at 305-664-2461. They too

will be glad to set you up for a day offshore!
