Contributed By Captain Ann Holahan - Boneranger - Backcountry Fishing

Fishing Report for March 28, 2001!

Hello, from the Sportfishingof the World! We are yet at another end of a Great Fishing Month, with some Great Action Ahead for April, May, June and the Summer months which is not far behind! For some Great Catches and Releases for Bonefish, Tarpon, Permit, Redfish, Trout, and other Species.

Thanks to everyone who fished with me this month, and have had some great fishing with catches and releases of those elusive bones, and boy, let me tell you, those tarpon are marching in right along, just as we anticipated, and with our baited hooks, and this warm weather, let me tell you folks, it doesn't get any better than this!

March has been indeed a warm one, with a variety of breezes from the Northeast, Northwest, East, and Southeast, driving the bonefish up on the flats oceanside and on the flats in the backcountry, that I would call some frantic feeding, mudding, along with displaying their tail walking excitement, that's a sight that you will never forget!

Its hard not to get the fever for these reel screamers, and we have been fishing with them on live bait shrimp, and fly, and have had many grand runs and catches, with the best release, your picture! Many anglers had caught and released several bonefish this month, on live bait, and jigs, weighing in from 5lbs up to 12lbs, and we had some really big fish on fly, using shrimp patterns on #5 hooks, also with some crab patterns, also tied on #5 and #6 hooks, and fish weighed in from 9lbs up to 11lbs. Some happy anglers, with some great casting, prevailed on those big bones, and I hope they will be back to conquer that gray ghost again!

Also some Giant Silver Kings have been caught and released on the Oceanside and Backcountry, on live bait, and crabs, with fish weighing in from 30lbs up to 100lbs. Seeing the mullet back up to the flats and channels, is knowing the fish are not far behind! That's a Great way to Kick off the Season, and I am sure Anglers from all over will be returning to conquer the Leaps and Bounds of this Beautiful Creature we call Megalops Atlantica!

With the Start of Tarpon Season only days away, we are going to have a busy and prosperous, April, May, and June, from these Giant Silver Kings, and we know the mullet are here!

April is a great time for the Elusive Bonefish, and the ever Powerful Permit! What a great time of the year to grab a Grand Slam! Come on down and Join in on the fun, and experience of these magnificant gamefish!

For every angler that has been to the Keys or Islamorada to fish, they get to see for themselves the magnitude and diversity here from sight casting to some really incredible gamefish as the bonefish on fly, or the use of light tackle in the backcountry for redfish, trout, or snook, and whether or not the anglers have come to fish or to snorkel and/or diving the coral reef, you will always leave with the remembrance and beauty that always mistifies our Keys, and knowing this granduere lies within our Paradise.

I am also seeing the Permit around the rock ledges on the oceanside and on the wrecks and flats in the backcountry, with these Powerful beauties, weighing an average between 15-25lbs. That is a challenge that goes unscaved! You must simply try challenging your skills on these rod benders!

Since Snook season reopened on the 1st of Feb, there have been some good catches and releases on pilchards and jigs, tipped with shrimp. Catches and releases have been in the 18" up to the 30" catagory.

With a few of these brief cold snaps we are having, the shrimp and pilchards are also making the bite right, at the bridges and channels, the snook fishing, with the snook being so prevelent, they have been reported ranging from 5lbs up to 7lbs., reports of some big snook have been reported in Florida Bay and East Cape in the channels and pot holes and also on the rock piles and wrecks of the backcountry.

We have caught and released alot of sharks, barracuda, jack crevelle and snapper on flats and in the channels on live shrimp, and jigs tipped with shrimp. Also, trout fishing in Everglades National Park has been very prevelent, trout ranging from 17" up to 25", and that makes for a hearty meal. We also have shared several catches of ladyfish, sharks, jack crevelle, and mangrove snapper.

Don't forget April, May, June and July provide some Excellent fishing here in the Keys for those Tarpon, and Elusive Bones, and Permit! Don't miss your chance to challenge any of these powerful gamefish, it will prove their reputation! And Make A Believer Even out of You!

We have also been doing some fishing out on the patches with several catches of grouper, mutton snapper, jack crevelle, yellowtail, and hogfish. That will definitely keep a bend in your rod, and keep you and the Mrs. busy! Redfish are just starting to show back in Flamingo, with catches in the range of 6lbs up to 8lbs on fly and light tackle with live shrimp, jigs, and worms. They have been in the pockets, and channels in the backcountry. Don't forget, with only a few days away, Tarpon season will be here before you know it, so get your dates together, bookings are limited, and don't forget we do evening trips, and April, and May are some great months on live bait for some big bruisers, and I do mean Big! I do have still have some time alotted for anglers to get a chance to experience the challenge of these big and powerful fish. Whether your a Novice, Intermediate or Advanced Angler, you will prove to yourself, that these fish are an experience all of their own, and whatever species you challenge, your sure to go home with memories of a lifetime!

April will provide Great opportunities for bonefish on light tackle or fly as well! Evening is an opportunity also to challenge the elusive gray ghost, and we should see some action for some permit on live bait for you to experience too. With March behind us, and April is around the corner, Some Spring fishing will get rid of those Cabin Blues! So, all I can say, season can only electrify, and for you the anglers only bigger and better flats, and backcountry action is the way to go and some great offshore action, is waiting for you too! I would sure hate to see the avid fisherman and women miss the bite on those elusive bones, tarpon, permit, reds, snook, trout, jacks, sharks, snapper, and it's such a thrill to see the run jumps, and power of all of these truly magnificant fish. When you can also experience a day in the backcountry, the beauty and wildlife alone in Everglades National Park, is sure to make you come back with a smile on your face. So, for you Fly Enthusiasts, and Light Tackle Specialists, lets get our Season off with a Variety and Memories that will last all year through.

Don't forget, early evening trips are also good for bonefishing, and tarpon! You can only have some great times with catch and release either on light tackle or fly! I always offer No Pressure Fly Instruction, and would be happy to get you involved in the most sought after sport and gamefish your looking for. Give me a call or drop an email at captann@boneranger.com, What a great way to hone and test your skills on some great flats, and backcountry fishing and hook into other Challenging Saltwater Gamefish!

I will always keep inputting this reminder to anglers, but please make sure you have proper gear with you such as Amber Polorized Sunglasses, it's essential you have them, they cut the glare down immensely, and you will have an easier time in seeing the fish to cast at! Also, make sure you have at least a Sunblock with a SPF of 30 or better, you don't want your vacation to be ruined with some terrible sunburns, this time of the year the UV'S are very strong, and make sure you bring plenty of water, and Poweraid to Cool Off, after Fighting the Big Fish!

If you would like to go offshore, please email or call me at 305-664-5891. I can recommend some of the Best Offshore Captains Available, or you can call Bud n' Mary's Marina directly at 305-664-2461. They too will be glad to set you up for a day offshore! I also offer Fishing Packages, with oceanfront accommodations, with moderate prices, for those who just want to fish, and not have to pay outrageous hotel costs, so you can have more time on the flats or in the backcountry. Make sure you go to my site, and hit the Rates& Package icon, and there you will see what we in Paradise have to offer! There is no better Saltwater Fishing Experience to have but, here in Paradise, Islamorada, Florida Keys! Make your next Fishing Adventure here! Please don't forget that Tarpon Season is around the corner, and bookings fill up a year to months in advance, so it's a great idea to get your plans together for the upcoming season starting in late April, May, June and July. I would love for you to have the Grand Experience of having one of these Powerhouses give you the best fight on fly or on live bait, that is a memory that will last forever!
