 Key West Fishing Report
Contributed By Captain Bill Wickers, Jr. Charter Boat Linda D

My son Billy and I had the pleasure of taking Florida Governor Jeb Bush and his sons out fishing on a half day of fishing on the Linda D IV recently. The best catch of the day was by Jebby Bush who caught and released an estimated 6ft 85lb shark on 30 lb test. Everyone had a great time. The governor had a couple of really BIG fish on that he fought for a while but they managed to pull the hook. We were sure that one of them was a very large shark probably over 200lbs from the way it was fighting. The Governor is a real down to earth person and was a lot of fun fishing with him and his family.Hope to fish with him again . Frank O'Roark and three friends was out today on the Linda D IV. He caught a 7ft 4" Sailfish on 30 lb. test. The fish gave a really good fight making spectacular leaps and long runs.Frank released the fish after getting a lot of great pictures . The sail is estimated at 55 to 60 lbs. Everyone caught dolphin and had a great time. There was a report of a Blue Marlin caught on the Cowboy by Jeff Weech of the Ukraine. The fish was estimated at 340lbs.It was entered in the Key West Fishing Tournament and the angler will recieve a nice trophy. To date over 1000 anglers have entered over 1800 catches and releases in the Key West and Lower Keys Fishing Tournament. The KWLKFT runs from April through November. Anglers compete in the Men's, Women's,Junior(up to age 14), and Pee Wee (up to age 10)divisions.The tournament has 9 line class divisions and 44 species of fish are eligible for awards. The Summer fishing has come to a close and Fall fishing is underway. The fall sailfish action as well as tuna and wahoo will get better everday. The reef fishing will also get HOT with good barracuda, grouper, mutton snapper, mackerel, jacks and yellowtail action. During the Fall Sailfish Run( October 15 to December 15 )anglers will have a better than average opportunity to catch a sailfish. This is great action and lots of fun!
